Welcome to April, a month that symbolizes renewal. The first official day of spring was March 20, but spring truly begins when April arrives the daffodils and crocus are flowering, the new color. The Easter Bunny regales us with decorated eggs, chocolates, and marshmallow treats (pass around the Peeps, my pretties). Much more significantly, our Savior defeats death and regardless of our specific beliefs, gives us the gifts of forgiveness, hope and eternal happiness! Spring also brings us closer to our parading season and in case you have not heard, that is what Shriners live for-parading is our special calling card! If you need to refresh your understanding and enthusiasm, go to our website and reread Paul Page's "The Great Parade of the Nobles of Murat." Before our first children's hospital and before the Shrine Circus, our special community signature was parading. It was what the general public admired, enjoyed and cheered. Make no mistake, parading greased the skids for our later hospital system. So, nobles, whether we are talking about a small community parade or a much larger Potentate's called parade, we need to make our presence crystal clearly recognized. In the early years, we marched proudly by the hundreds. In later years, we were recognized as those fun guys in fezzes driving a variety of "little cars." We have added motorcycles, vintage vehicles, Corvettes, replica racing cars, pirate ships, clowns-yes, clowns, and all kinds of motorized wonders. No Shriner parading unit is too small to make an impression and positive impact. Some of our units are service oriented and that is perfectly fine. Those units can support our parading with afterglows or family picnics. The rest of us need to be "on the street" marching, banging a drum, playing our instruments, riding our vehicles, entertaining the crowd with our mobile bathtub antics doing what Shriners are known for-having a ton of fun, proudly parading! So, What's Happening First up this month is our annual Children's Easter Egg Hunt on Sunday, April 3, in Compass Park at the Indiana Masonic Home in Franklin. If the weather cooperates, we will have children's crafts, clowns, face painting, balloon hats, did I mention clowns, special prizes courtesy of our Shelby County Shrine Club and of course, the hunt for Easter eggs! If the weather decides to not cooperate, we will at least have a drive-up Easter egg bag pickup at Compass Park for parents and their children until our supplies run out or the clowns pass out! This month, our Divan members will be following our Directors Staff to their annual Shrine Directors Association Meeting to learn about the latest and greatest recommendations of Shriners International to improve our ceremonials. We also hope to put together a bus trip or two to one of our Shriners Children's Medical Centers and possibly a neighboring temple's Shrine Circus. A Ladies "Pamper Me" Day or Weekend is also a distinct possibility. A Final Thought We have had to endure some pretty disturbing world events of late, inflation has become a heavy load, climate change just might be somewhat real, and the pandemic does not quite want to go away. We could just throw our hands up, lay down and feel sorry for ourselves but heck no, we are Shriner Masons and that is not who we are. We are going to continue caring for children. We are going to pick up our pace of enthusiastically parading and bringing smiles and enjoyment to our communities-our way of spreading hope, love, and happiness! Yours in the Faith, William R. Stanton Potentate
