Walking Tall in Shrinedom
The front of this magazine features a picture of our Walking Tall Statue that memorializes a singular event in Shriners history. It is one of the most recognizable symbols of philanthropy and for a lot of us an endearing reminder of our purpose. It is a representation of an event that took place in Evansville, IN, in 1970. Noble Albert Hortman, in true Shriner spirit, offered to help a little girt named Bobbi Jo Wright who was at a sum- mer outing for disabled children. Photographer Randy Dieter was taken aback by Shriner Hort- man carrying the 5-year-old with cerebral palsy in one hand and her crutches in the other. He was able to use the last shot on his camera to capture the now famous photo. Adopted by the fraternity, statues shot up all over the world. That was 50 years ago. Shriners International is marking this memorable event in our history by highlighting pictures submitted by temples worldwide in various publications. This depiction has been refer- enced by several different names over the years: Walking Tall, Editorial Without Words and the Silent Messenger. All reference our philanthropic purpose of helping children, selflessly. No matter what your situation is during these troubled times, this story and what it represents must make you feel good about being a noble of Murat Shrine. There will be a time soon that we will be able to resume our labors in supporting each other and the hospitals and kids we serve. Please start looking forward to events that I earnestly need your participation in. The first thing coming up is the Potentate's Golf Outing on Thursday, July 16, at Wind- ing Ridge Golf Course. Please look for the ad in this magazine. All net proceeds will be evenly divided between the hospitals we serve. The next events I need you to support are the Murat 500 Mile Race and Parade on August 22 and 23 and Logansport Shrine Club Frolic and Parade on August 21 and 22. If you are not participating in Indy 500 events, please try and come to the Logansport Shrine Club Frolic Friday, August 21, and participate in the parade over Lo- gansport, Indiana, streets on August 22. After the parade at the Logansport Shrine Club at around 1 p.m. will be a Potentate's Reception. It will surely be a fun time and most likely be the first time some of us have ventured out to be with other nobles. The next large event is the resched- uled Potentate's Ball. As advised last month, the new date is August 29, 2020, in the Egyptian Room at Murat Shrine. I would like this to be one of the largest and best at- tended Potentate Balls on record to finally mark some semblance of normal. Of course, this is all predicated on Live Nation being back to business with the governor of Indiana's blessing. September 9-13 brings us the Great Lakes Shrine Association in Evansville, IN. With Shriners International canceling the Imperial Session in Kansas City, the Shrine Association meetings will be vitally important to our fraternity. Please do everything possible to participate in the meetings, parade and fun in Evansville on the above dates. Also, in September on the 19th, the Presi- dents' Ball will be back. Come and enjoy the very danceable tunes of Twilite Nites Dance Orchestra and the great food prepared by the Oasis at Murat. I hope you got the postcard I sent out in May. It was sent in a true heartfelt spirit. Your leadership team and I miss you dearly. We can't wait to re-engage you at the "Club." I will continue to pray that the Grand Archi- tect of the Universe blesses and keeps each one of us. Mark A. Genung Potentate
